Are you an undergraduate or postgraduate student at the University of Greenwich?

Is English your second, third or even fourth language? Do you need to improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills?

You may be able to choose English for Academic Purposes (EAP) as one of your options. The School of Humanities & Social Sciences offers validated courses at different levels. Each course lasts one year and is worth 30 credits.

EAP courses aim to help you to:

  • Cope with the language of University life in the UK
  • Speak accurately as well as fluently and prepare for seminars
  • Read academic texts efficiently
  • Organise and present essays
  • Prepare for examinations
  • Acquire research techniques

Levels

The University normally requires an IELTS (International English Language Testing Scheme) score of 6.0 to register you on an undergraduate or   postgraduate programme. If you have a score of 6.0 or below or if you have the Cambridge PET, you will need EAP 5.

If you have a score of between 6 and 6.5 or if you have the Cambridge FCE, you will need EAP 6.  If you have a score above 6.5 or if you have the Cambridge Advanced, you will need EAP 7.

If you do not know your level, go along to one of the classes for informal assessment. Level One students may choose EAP 5, 6 or 7. Level Two students may choose EAP 6 or 7. Level Three students may choose EAP 7 only.

How To Enrol

Check that your school allows you to choose EAP as an option (ask your Programme leader or tutor)

If the answer is 'Yes', and you know your level, simply come to the first class with your IELTS score or Cambridge exam result.

If the answer is 'Yes', but you do not you know your level, please e-mail Simon Dye with a short (around 200 words) answer to the question: ‘Why do you want to take EAP as an option?’

If you cannot take EAP as a validated 30-credit option, you could still take EAP as an extra, but you have to pay the current fee for a 30 credit course.

For further information, please contact Simon Dye.
