Pre-Sessional English Language Courses

The normal English language entry requirement for University of Greenwich Programmes is at least IELTS 6.0 (or its equivelant in another recognised language testing system).  So if you apply with an IELTS score of 5.0 or 5.5, you may be asked to complete a five or nine week Pre-Sessional English Language course, before starting your chosen programme.

Our Pre-Sessional courses are accredited by the British Council and taught at the University’s historic Greenwich Campus. They aim to develop students' English language and academic skills (especially writing, reading, listening, note-taking, group work, speaking and presenting) to the standard required for progression to a full undergraduate or postgraduate programme at the University of Greenwich.

Nine-week courses begin in July and October, and five-week courses begin in August and November, each year – permitting successful candidates to enter a programme in September (for summer courses) or January (for autumn courses), depending on the start dates for individual programmes.

Pre-Sessional students are required to hold a conditional offer for a full University of Greenwich programme. In addition, for entry to a nine-week course, the minimum English language entry requirement is IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 133 (cbt) or 45 (ibt) or 450 (pbt); and for a five-week course, the minimum requirement is IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 173 (cbt) or 60 (ibt) or 500 (pbt).

Teaching is provided by highly-qualified staff, and classes are normally taught in groups of 20 students or less. They are timetabled on Mondays to Thursdays, 09.00-18.00, with a total of 15 hours’ teaching time per week – normally four hours per day (morning and afternoon), in two-hour sessions. In addition, students are expected to devote at least five hours per week to independent study. Assessment consists of a class presentation, an essay, a portfolio of independent work, and a final exam.

Students are provided with a full course guide and portfolio. They are also given access to the University Libraries and Language Centre, where they can use a wide range of electronic and paper-based learning resources. The total cost of additional materials which they are required to buy does not exceed £50.
