Enterprise and Consultancy
The Department of Communications and Creative Arts (CCA) is a vibrant research community. While many members have been included in the CCMS 2008 RAE submission for the University, all members of the department are engaged in research, publication and artistic practice, as well as enterprise, consulting and professional activities. Their work is highly diverse, and ranges from conventional print publications to a variety of audiovisual media.
Research Profiles
- Professor Sue Golding was seconded to The Jan Van Eyck Arts Academy, Maastricht as a lead researcher on a European project on The Enlightenment from 2000 and returned to UOG in 2003. Since then she has led the new taught MAPP MA, setting up the Low-Fidelities Web-streaming and archiving of lectures and seminars and has been instrumental in establishing the department‘s MPhil/PhD provision currently supervising 5 students. - Mairéad McClean (Reader in Film and Video Arts) produces film and video art installations around the themes of memory and Irish identity for galleries and cinemas. Her work has been funded by the Arts Council and the AHRC. Mairéad McClean's full profile
- Alev Adil (Head of Department). Her work deals with the mediation of memory and diasporic identity. Her first volume of poetry Venus Infers, was published in 2004 to coincide with Cyprus’s entry into the European Union. - Dr Steve Kennedy's work investigates contemporary discursive environments and technology. Since the completion of his PhD The Technology Agenda in 2004 he has published articles and released several critically acclaimed musical recordings as One Deck and Popular. Steve Kennedy's full profile
- Dr Gauti Sigthorsson obtained his doctorate from the University of Minnesota, USA, in 2004. His work on digital technology, literature and consumer culture has been published in English, Icelandic and German translation. Gauti Sigthorsson's full profile
- Caroline Smith is a writer and performer. She has written extensively about photography, and her essays have appeared in exhibition catalogues and arts publications. Caroline Smith's full profile
- Rosamund Davies has a background of professional practice in the film and television industries. Her current research interests focus on cross art-form practice in the context of media convergence and new media platforms and business models in the creative industries. Enterprise funded by the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF)
The Upstart programme supports existing businesses in the Media Arts including Publishing, Interactive and Graphic Design, Audio-visual (sound, music, games, film and video), Performing Arts, Theatre and Visual Arts. The programme also aims to develop research and consultancy in the area of Media Arts.
