Advanced Screen and Performance Writing

This course will advance creative and creative skills learnt in Introduction to Writing for Performance and Writing for the Screen at Level 2. You will develop your screen and performance writing skills to a high level and follow your own interests and talents in your choice of genre and format. You will gain an understanding of industry practices and relevant approaches for career development. Key content areas for Writing for the Screen include pitching an idea, writing a screenplay, collaborating and giving feedback, strategies for getting a screenplay produced, funding opportunities and professional guidance. You will have an appreciation of the respective roles of key creative team members, such as the director and producer, and how their roles relate to that of the writer.

Writing for Performance will include developing a script for performance, staging the work in a number of contexts, working with performers and developing collaborative skills in giving feedback and appraising the work of other students. You will be able to situate your work within UK contemporary performance writing. A combination of seminars, screenings and workshops will be offered as well as the opportunity to attend plays and performances. Assessment will include the screenplay and the performance script, a research project into industry institutions (Writing for the Screen) and an essay (Writing for Performance).
