Drama

The vibrant theatre community of South East London provides the perfect base for studying Drama and enables our students to access some of the world’s best theatre at the nearby Southbank, West End and many fringe venues throughout the city. The University of Greenwich also offers specialist facilities for students to make their own work and public performances are staged throughout the year at the Old Baths Theatre, at professional venues such as the Greenwich Playhouse and The Tramshed and outdoor, site-specfic work is produced for places such as the historic Maritime Campus and Greenwich’s Christmas Market.

What we offer

Drama at Greenwich offers students a grounding in the history and theory of theatre to enhance understanding of contemporary theatre environments and practices. Modules range widely from those that study dramatic literature and history to those that engage with specific performance practices such as applied drama, physical theatre and playwriting. All courses combine theory and practice and provide students with opportunities to develop their performance skills, improve their writing and public speaking, acquire technical expertise, and experiment with new approaches to theatre practice and research. Students engage in theatre-making as writers, technicians, directors and performers throughout the degree.

Staff

The lecturers in the Drama programme are all practitioners and researchers in the field specialising in contemporary British theatre, theatre history, applied drama and youth work, devised theatre, music theatre, playwriting and digital performance. We are committed to sharing our expertise and enabling our students to realise their own career ambitions through work placements; a broad range of transferable skills; and targeted careers sessions with invited practitioners and representatives from Arts Council England, Independent Theatre Council and Shakespeare’s Globe.

Opportunities

Work placements can be undertaken in a variety of theatre related roles, making the most of our exciting links with local theatre companies – such as London Bubble, Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre, The Space, The Greenwich Theatre and Emergency Exit Arts – as well as in other professions such as publishing and TV production.

Being part of the department for Communication and Creative Arts enables Greenwich drama students to take courses in Media, Literary Studies and Creative Writing and to create interdisciplinary projects – allowing our future theatre-makers, playwrights, teachers and creative industry professionals to gain valuable experience for their career paths and to collaborate with a diverse range of students.
