Biography :
Alev Adil’s research explores diasporal and postcolonial identity and memory practices in contemporary literature and art, with a particular emphasis on Cypriot identity. In addition to publishing in international academic and literary journals, she is an internationally renowned poet who has been translated into Albanian, Azeri, Greek, Lithuanian, Romanian and Turkish; and a respected literary critic who has reviewed for The Times Literary Supplement, The Financial Times, The Independent and The Guardian. Since 2004 she has published a volume of poetry Venus Infers, and has been anthologised in 15 collections of poetry in the UK, the US, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Romania and Lithuania.
Adil’s creative work explores identity and memory and the relationship between language and image through both literary and creative practice. Her film-poems and photography have been exhibited in group shows in the Baltimore Gallery (2000) in the US, The Small Mansions Gallery (2001), Waterman’s Gallery (2001), PM Gallery (2008) and the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in London (2008 and 2010). As part of her research into collective memory, she created an on-line exhibition space, www.memorymap.org.uk for photography, film, writing and music. MemoryMap is a (psycho)Geographical (un)Postioning System, a digital cartography created collectively through the diverse contributions of participants, exploring our relationship with place and with the objects, gestures, climates and people we associate with those places.
