Caroline Smith is a Senior Lecturer, writer and performance artist. She is the Programme Leader for the BA Hons Media Writing.

Eating Secret, written by Smith in collaboration with the public and performed by her alter ego, Mertle, was selected for Tate Moderm, The Roundhouse. Arts Depot and the Cochrane Theatre in 2009. She has previously performed Spank in the Tramway for the National Review of Live Art 2008; Albany Theatre for the International Symposium of Intimacy 2007; at the Edinburgh Room in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery; Rich Mix Studios and the Whipping Rooms (for the collective, OMSK) in the East End; as well as in numerous site specific venues.

Eating Secret has featured extensively in the press, including BBC Radio London; the Guardian Women's pages (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifestyle/2009/jun/19/mertle-food-eating-secret-caroline-smith); The Times' Art pages (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/stage/theatre/

) and Diva magazine. Spank has been reviewed in Contemporary Art, Art Monthly and Total Theatre.

Caroline received her Masters in Creative Writing at Middlesex University. She was co-founder/director of new nedia company Liquid Idea, shortlisted for the Telegraph New Business Award in 2001. her writings on visual art and culture have been extensively published in Attitude magazine, where she was Arts Editor; Creative Camera (New Media Editor), Women's Art Magazine and Wasafiri Journal of International Contemporary Writing in London as well as Black Book in New York, where she was European Editor, running its London Office. Her fiction has been published by Cornerhouse and Tank. Eating Secret was most recently published as an eight page text and art pieces in the Issues.
