Course Convenor: Dr Gauti Sigthorsson
Course Code: COGA 1003

Dissertations are independent research and writing projects. The usual length of a dissertation is approximately 8,000-10,000 words. It should draw on each student's degree programme, and the topic, research methods, sources and mode of presentation should relate to the taught courses completed in Year 2.

Students register for dissertations in the spring of Year 2, and should attend a library workshop at that time to help get started for summer research and reading.

How to Register: Please download the dissertation form and fill it in as completely as possible. Submit one copy with your course choice form, and one copy to the dissertation coordinator, Gauti Sigthorsson (sg12@gre.ac.uk).

Requirements

Any student can register for a dissertation, but it is strongly advised that only students who attained a 2:2 mark or better in Year 2 do so, because taught courses offer more organisational and tutorial support.

The dissertation is an independent research and writing project, and depends heavily on your ability to work on your own and deliver projects on time.

Overview

In the first month of Term 1 you are required to attend the Dissertation Seminar, after which you hand in an abstract (1,500 words) of your dissertation to your supervisor. By middle of Term 2 you should have a 6,000-8,000 word draft ready for your supervisor, and your final draft (approx. 10,000 words) is due at the end of Term 3.
