A 10 week comprehensive programme of seminars and workshops covering a wide range of essential knowledge. Suitable entrepreneurs who are considering starting a business, or have recently started a creative business.

All sessions run from 6pm to 8.30pm.

The Creative Economy and Cultural Entrepreneurship

 

In this session we will look at the wider creative economy globally and in the UK and examine the nature of cultural entrepreneurship in relation to you and your creative business.  We will also develop a framework for clarifying your focus, setting out your goals and developing an action plan to get your business started.

Creative Thinking

 

 

 

Starting a creative business requires creativity not just in our practice but also in our business.  In this session we will learn how to plan and work creatively, ensuring quality within the creative process.

Finding your Business Model

 

A sustainable business model is one of the most important first steps in setting up a creative business.  In this session we will look at researching your creative idea and how to find your Unique Selling Point. 

 

We will also examine different routes to generating income, revenue and profit and come away with an understanding of the difference between a good idea and a good idea with an effective business model.

Running your Creative Business

 

 

Running your creative business can seem like a daunting task but there are some easy methods to use that will ensure you keep on track.  In this session we will look at a range of legal structures for your business and gain knowledge of the tools of business and financial management and how to use them.

Creative Capital

 

 

All creative businesses need investment and/or funding to survive.  This session will look at the difference between turn-over, revenue and profit and will examine the funding landscape, both public and private, in the UK and how to make your case to funders/investors.

Tax and your creative business

 

 

Tax and other legal issues can be a world of mystery to the start-up creative business.  This session will demystify the tax system and address any concerns that you may have. 

 

We will also look at a range of related legal issues such as your obligations as a business owner and contracts.

Marketing Magic

 

Marketing is an essential part of any successful creative business.  This session will examine and evaluate a range of marketing tools for your business. 

 

The session will also look at the value of building networks and relationships as part of your marketing strategy.

Building your Brand

 

Branding is more than a company logo on a business card; it should incorporate everything that you do.  This session will look at the importance of branding and will allow you to understand and effectively articulate the brand values of your creative business.

Presentations

 

The last session of the course will give you an opportunity to present your business case and receive constructive feedback on the viability of your ideas.

 

 

Assessment:

 

30% on the presentation of your business idea focusing on USP, brand and customer/client profile.

 

70% on a written assignment (3000 words) outlining a Feasibility Study and Action Plan for your creative business.

 

Creative Commerce is accredited by the University of Greenwich. On successful completion of the course you will receive an award of a postgraduate Professional Development Certificate (30 credits at postgraduate level).

 

Additional Support:

 

You will be assigned a mentor from your creative industry and will receive 121 support/coaching.

 

You will also be enrolled as a student at the university and will be entitled to use the facilities such as the library.
