Social Political & Cultural Studies

The department of Social, Political & Cultural Studies (SPCS) brings together nineteen academic staff who teach and research in a variety of subject areas. Each of our four subject teams - History, Philosophy, Politics and Sociology - offer a single honours degree programme, though many of our students pursue a combined degree.

We encourage our students to explore the interrelation of historical, philosophical, political and sociological issues, and to pursue their studies across and beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Studying with SPCS provides students with a rigorous and flexible training in the Humanities tradition. As well as specialist training in their chosen field, students are encouraged to think critically and independently. Many of our courses provide opportunities for work placements and independent research and all of our degrees provide a firm platform for a variety of professional careers.
