Conservation

Environmental Conservation at the University of Greenwich IEEM

This MSc programme is designed for those already active in environmental conservation who wish to broaden and update their knowledge, and for graduates wishing to pursue a career in conservation or environmental management.

As well as covering topics in five core courses students have the opportunity of choosing their project topic area. At the end of the taught part of the programme students need to complete a research project to develop specific knowledge and skills in their chosen area of environmental conservation. Previous projects have included work in countries of origin, and trips abroad. Students are encouraged to work with a company or conservation organisation to gain 'real world' experience and so their project is relevant to current conservation issues.

The emphasis of this MSc programme is on developing a broad theoretical knowledge base combined with the realities of contemporary landscape conservation, ecology and environmental management. Teaching staff include active consultants and students are encouraged to join the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, the leading professional organisation in this field. The resources of Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory are used for practical activities.

On completion of the programme, students will have developed an interdisciplinary understanding of modern day conservation and environmental management and the current issues in the profession. They will also gain an appreciation of the rationale underlying conservation decision-making and and a practical understanding of ecological survey and monitoring techniques as well as the ability to critically evaluate data and use it to inform decision-making and management planning.

Our MSc programme has now been awarded the IEEM award for best practice.
