Profile

Samer finished his undergraduate studies in 1981 at the University of Sana’a, The Yemen, where he obtained a joint honours BSc degree, major Biochemistry/minor Chemistry. After working as a Biomedical scientist and heading a number of Clinical Biochemistry departments, in the Ministry of Health, he came to England and started a PhD degree at the Biochemistry Department, King’s College London, studying Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs) under the supervision of Professor Brian G. Winchester.

In 1992 he submitted a thesis entitled “The Substrate Specificity of Lysosomal a-Mannosidase” and obtained his PhD. He then briefly worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Child Health, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

In 1993 he joined the Thrombosis Research Institute, Manresa Road, Chelsea, London, where he worked as a senior research post-doctoral fellow investigating the mechanisms of activation of platelets by inositol phosphates.

In 2000 he joined the University of Greenwich where he became a senior lecturer, Biochemistry, and in 2007 he was appointed as the School of Science Learning Enhancement Coordinator, responsible for the identifying and disseminating good practice leading to the enhancement of the student learning experience.
