Volunteering

Community Base, the university's volunteer programme, encourages students to volunteer in the community – an opportunity which is widely taken up. Volunteering is a great way to develop skills and experience whilst making a valuable contribution to the community.

We have a team of staff based across the Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway campuses whose role is to support volunteers. We are here to help you so please do contact us. Some key information to get you started is detailed below:

Getting started

The easiest thing to do first is to either e-mail volunteering@gre.ac.uk or to meet with a member of staff at one of our weekly drop-in sessions for volunteering. Please look at the volunteering opportunities listed on GET Online . If you can't find what you are looking for or would like further information then it is best to come and see us for a chat. University of Greenwich volunteers are entitled to free support and we will make sure that all your activities, training, transport and expenses are free too.

Because there are so many different volunteering opportunities on offer it can sometimes be difficult to decide what to do. To help you make a choice, here are some areas that you can consider (these are the sort of questions that we will ask you if you come to see us at one of our volunteering drop-in sessions).

  • What do you enjoy doing? Think about how you can use your current skills and interests to help others and the community. Would you like to do something that relates to your School of Study? We aim to provide volunteering opportunities that relate to every School of Study at the university.
  • What do you want to do in the future? Volunteers gain valuable experience for their CVs and become more employable. Think about your ideal job, how to get there and the voluntary experience that will help you to succeed. Can you identify the sort of people or groups that you would most like to work with? For example, school children, young people, older people, vulnerable groups, families, charities, public sector organisations (e.g. hospitals) or projects relating to the environment.
  • How much time do you realistically have to give? Think about how often and for how long you would like to volunteer.
