*AccessAbility Project

The *AccessAbility Project is a joint initiative between the Access and Widening Participation Unit (AWPU) at the University of Greenwich and Aspire – Aimhigher SE London. Our main focus is to provide information and support for prospective university students who also have a disability, impairment, specific learning difficulty and/or mental health difficulties. We are separate from the Disability & Dyslexia Team as we work with prospective students and we are not involved in any academic issues or classroom support.
The purpose of this website is to provide useful information for disabled students who are considering coming to study at the University of Greenwich in 2010 and 2011. Our team is comprised of 30 *AccessAbility ambassadors who are both undergraduates and postgraduates from all different disciplines across the university.
In addition to the information on these web pages, the project can also provide the following services:
- Mentoring – this can take place at either the university or the school/college the prospective student attends.
- E-mentoring – similar to face-to-face mentoring but using an e-mail system. This service is currently not available in Kent or Medway.
- Shadowing – prospective students can accompany an ambassador for a day.
- Open days – the ambassadors attend open days on all three campuses giving prospective students with the opportunity to discuss the real life experiences of a number of disabled ambassadors.
- Student life presentations – our specialist ambassadors can visit schools/colleges and give a student life presentation from their own perspective.
- Disability Awareness Workshops – are delivered by the ambassadors and has been devised as a useful introduction to disability and higher education.
- D/deaf Awareness Workshops – as above but relating to Deaf and hard of hearing students.
The ambassadors are also involved in training the access and widening participation staff and fellow ambassadors on issues involving disability in higher education.
