Deaf Awareness Week Quiz
To commemorate and acknowledge Deaf Awareness Week – 28 June to 4 July 2010 – the *AccessAbility Project and the Diversity and Equality Team at the University of Greenwich have devised a prize quiz
.
There are 35 multiple choice questions and six prizes available. Each question has four optional answers and contains only one correct answer. The first prize is £50 of book tokens and there are 5 runner-up prizes of £10 book tokens. In the event of a tie, the winners will be picked out of a hat.
The quiz is available for anyone of any age and anywhere in the world; the only people who are not allowed to do the quiz are the *AccessAbility Ambassadors and the Equality and Diversity Team. The quiz is available here and the completed entries need to be emailed to our administrator Paul (ap708@gre.ac.uk) by midnight (GMT) on Sunday 4 July 2010. The winners will be notified by email by Sunday 11 July 2010. The correct answers will also be available from the *AccessAbility Project and the Diversity and Equality Team websites on Sunday 11 July.
Please note – the term D/deaf appears a few times throughout the quiz. This term is quite often used in education and research and refers to people who are Deaf (the capital D is generally used for people who have sign language as their preferred/native language and are part of Deaf culture) or deaf (which is often used by people who have English as their preferred/native language and is mostly used for people who are hard of hearing/partially hearing).
These are general terms we have chosen for the quiz although D/deaf education, history and culture is very complex and not everyone is in agreement about certain issues. Unless stated otherwise, the questions are specific to the UK. For more information about Deaf Awareness Week, more information is available from the following links:
This quiz is similar to the United Nation’s International Day for Disabled Peoples which was available in December 2009. However, there were a number of complaints from colleagues and friends who said most of the questions were too difficult. Hopefully these questions are a bit easier.
The quiz in December was won by Strood Academy in Kent and was completed as part of a tutorial group to raise awareness of disability issues. This quiz for Deaf Awareness Week can therefore be completed by individuals or groups. Please forward the quiz to people or organisations who may be interested in attempting the quiz and good luck to everyone.
