About the Centre for Sustainability
The purpose of the Centre for Sustainability is to facilitate progress towards a sustainable future through its educational provision and through research/consultancy and enterprise activities. In particular the centre focuses on three interrelated areas:
Educational Provision
The centre promotes the enhancement of existing courses and the development of new courses and programmes, including short courses that reflect the sustainability agenda. The centre will assist in developing graduates that are 'fit for purpose' in terms of meeting the needs and challenges of the world in the 21st century.
Research and Enterprise

To facilitate and promote the search for solutions to create a sustainable future the Centre for Sustainability will:

Facilitate interdisciplinary research, enterprise and teaching opportunities that underpin a sustainable future

Promote and facilitate the search for sustainable technological solutions to environment and development issues

Promote economic development opportunities that a transition to sustainability creates.

Work with business, industry and communities to move towards a sustainable future

Provide a regional focus of expertise in sustainability issues accessible to a wide range of individuals and stakeholders

Promote and share best sustainability practise throughout a range of individuals, communities and key stakeholders

Promote the concept of sustainability throughout South East England as well as nationally and internationally

Provide life long learning opportunities for people to engage with sustainability

Promote community participation in identifying pathways to a sustainable future

Promote the inclusion of sustainability across a broad range of educational opportunities offered by the university

Support the corporate plan of the University with respect to developing its estate and operations in an environmentally sustainable manner
At the core of the centre's philosophy is an understanding that sustainability can only be addressed by balancing social, economic and environmental aspects of development. This requires multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary ways of working that draw together partnerships of interested groups and stakeholders in the search for ways of practically delivering sustainable futures. Sustainability is both possible and desirable if the creative talents of business, industry, governments and individuals are drawn together with a common purpose and goal. It is the role of the Centre for Sustainability to help to achieve that vision.
