Aims

This project, conducted under the framework of the national Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme (UAS), allows undergraduates to gain academic credit for their work in schools and colleges. The undergraduate will aim to develop a range of skills and to be presented with an opportunity to experience an early taste of teaching for those interested in pursuing teaching as a career. The undergraduate will be expected to work in a school/college once a week, for a duration of up to 6 months. The project will also help to inspire a new generation of prospective Computing undergraduates by providing role models for school pupils and to help improve exam results in general by providing extra assistance in the classroom. Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

A. Analyse and evaluate the standard teaching methods and be able to prepare lesson plans and teaching materials.
B. Understand the needs of individuals, and to handle difficult and potentially disruptive situations in a class room.
C. Retain and improve on key employability skills such as public speaking, organisational, prioritising, negotiating and critical reporting skills.
D. Improvise, give (and receive) feedback.
E. Understand staff responsibilities and possess interpersonal skills when dealing with colleagues.
F. Critically reflect on personal experience in school/college and on practical issues in the classroom.

Indicative content

The undergraduate will be expected to satisfactorily complete a DBS check and to seek and secure a place in a school prior to the commencement of Stage 3. Before the undergraduate begins at the school they will be supported by receiving a training session on teaching. The session will provide the undergraduate with an introduction to working with children, conduct in the school environment, child protection issues and basic teaching methods. At the school, the undergraduate will be matched with a specific teacher who will act as mentor and assessor to the undergraduate during the course. They will offer guidance to the undergraduate during their weekly interaction and determine the level of responsibility and special projects given to them. The university will also provide a tutor to the undergraduate and the tutor will be the point of contact with the school mentor. The undergraduate will be required to assist teachers in the school/college for a duration of up to 6 months.

The undergraduate will also be given an initial introduction to relevant elements of the National Curriculum and its associated terminology (e.g. 'Key Stage 3' etc.), and the level of Computing teaching in which they will be participating. UAS (through the University) will provide a suggested 'Undergraduate Handbook' to participating departments as part of the UAS guidance documents, which will provide undergraduates with additional support, background reading, helpful suggestions and a list of contacts and resources.


Teaching and learning activity

Training sessions will be held at the university prior to the commencement at the school/college.

The undergraduate will have to visit their chosen school/college once a week, observing and assisting the assigned teacher(s).

The special project will be carried out with the collaboration and consent of the school/college.

Work plan(s) for the day will be designed by the undergraduate and the teacher(s).
