Aims

This course aims to develop a critical awareness of the sustainable management of cruise and resort tourism. Students will be supported to develop the ability to critique two key areas of mass tourism and to identify areas where sustainability initiatives can be implemented, or where sustainable management techniques can be adopted. The historical development and impacts of cruise and resort tourism will be explored as well as their future role within the international tourism industry.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Explore the contemporary cruise and resort sectors through an assessment of their history, context and current significance in the industry.
2 Investigate and assess the key cruise and resort tourism products, consumers and their interrelationships.
3 Evaluate the impacts of cruise and resort tourism in different contexts and generate ideas for their sustainable management.

Indicative content

This course will include subject matter within the following thematic areas; -
• The historical development and current contexts of Cruise and Resort Tourism
• Cruise and Resort tourism business models and products
• Cruise and Resort Tourism and sustainable development
• Profiles of Cruise and Resort tourists
• Managing the impacts of Cruise and Resort tourism; contemporary and future planning and policy agendas.

Teaching and learning activity

This module will be taught through a variety of learning modes; interactive lectures and tutorials using both literature-based analyses and multi-media content. In addition, short local field-visits to relevant sites will be used to support case studies, and guest speakers will be invited to talk about cruise and resort tourism experiences from an industry perspective.

Assessment

Report - 100% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Outline Details - Report into sustainable development issues in cruise or resort tourism.

Formative Assessment - Individual Presentation.
