Aims

The aims of the course are to introduce students to the foundations of event management as an academic discipline and as a vocational programme. Students will explore the nature and range of events and event careers and the role of events within society. The principles of developing an event from concept through to delivery and evaluation are investigated for understanding and application.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Describe the nature and range of events within the industry and the various, common categories of events.
2 Show evidence of knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of practical event management and event concept development
3 Understand and apply the basic functions of event management planning and key event management considerations.

Teaching and learning activity

• Lectures, tutorials, directed and self-managed reading, research activities, speakers from industry, feedback from tutors, group work.
• Preparation and presentation of directed tutorial activities and assessment peer review, participation in tutorials and discussions
• Carrying out research using a range of appropriate sources, participating as a group member, preparing and contributing to presentations and coursework.
• Developing observational skills by attending events
• Developing presentational skills in class activities and as part of the assessment

Assessment

Exam - 70% weighting, 40% pass mark, learning outcomes 1, 2 & 3.
A 2 hour examination on an overall understanding of the course. 2000 word equivalent.

Group Presentation - 30% weighting, 40% pass mark, learning outcomes 1 & 2.
Outline Details - 15 minute group case study analysis within the context of the characteristics, aims & objectives of a chosen event typology. 15 minute group presentation equivalent of 1000 words.

Formative Assessment - Preparation and presentation of directed tutorial activities and assessment, peer review, participation in tutorials and discussions. Learning outcomes 1, 2 & 3. 0% weighting.
