Aims

To gain knowledge of main accounting concepts, frameworks and paradigms in western accounting.
To provide knowledge and understanding of the financial and management accounting tools and methods.
To develop critically evaluation of a company’s performance using publically available information
To understand the relationship between accounting and non-financial disciplines.
To develop an awareness and appreciation of current developments in the linkages between financial and management accounting and strategic decisions

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Select and apply appropriate tools, and use sound judgement, in the application of financial decisions and the development of sensible financial information
2 Critically evaluate the problems of interpreting accounting information
3 Use financial measures to criticality assess the performance of companies
4 Identify and evaluate the accuracy of a costing system and identify ways to improve accuracy
5 Apply relevant frameworks to make effective investment decisions
6 Critically assess the limitations of accounting measures and the need to link financial and non-financial measures

Teaching and learning activity

The main topics will be covered through weekly lectures and tutorials should be furthered by the student’s independent study. Additional self-study materials will be available on Moodle. Students will also be able to practice computation and theory via MyAccountingLab. (www.myaccountinglab.mathxl.com). Additional technical IT Labs will be run to cover the skills and techniques needed for this course.
