Aims

• Increase awareness of structural design;
• develop awareness of building defects and building refurbishment;
• develop greater understanding of land surveying and setting out;
• develop deeper understanding of construction materials and methods;
• develop further understanding of construction planning, programming and control;
• increase awareness of health and safety in construction.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Identify structural components and evaluate forces in them and be familiar with the properties of construction materials;
2 begin to recognise common building defects;
3 use surveying equipment for purposes such as traverse surveying, levelling, curve ranging and setting out;
4 understand the various construction methods for both new‐build and refurbishment works and the management techniques used for the effective planning and control of construction projects;
5 appreciate the importance of health and safety in construction.

Indicative content

• Structural design and the properties of construction materials;
• the analysis of building defects and specification of appropriate remedial action;
• land surveying for the purposes of contouring, area and volume computation and setting out;
• construction methods for both new-build and refurbishment works;
• construction planning and programming, the control of time, cost and quality in construction;
• the management of health and safety in construction.

Teaching and learning activity

Lectures, supervised practical land surveying sessions, tutorials and supervised computer lab sessions.

Assessment

Project 1 - 35% weighting, 40% pass mark.

Exam - 50% weighting, 40% pass mark.
