Aims

This course aims to:
• provide an introduction to domestic and simple commercial construction including materials, services, building physics and construction technology;
• provide an introduction to the delivery of a sustainable built environment;
• develop an appreciation of the relationship between the external fabric and the internal environment.

Learning outcomes

On completing this course successfully you will be able to:
• demonstrate an understanding of how domestic and simple non-domestic buildings are constructed and the use of appropriate materials;
• appreciate reasoned suggestions for the use of appropriate construction solutions and best practice;
• consider the impact of the building fabric in particular to energy consumption;
• demonstrate an understanding of typical construction detailing and the relationship to legislation covering the technology, such as the Building Regulations, Planning Control and basic sustainability items.
• Demonstrate a technical appreciation of the construction process and sequencing of works utilised in typical traditional construction as appropriate background to the use of NRM 2

Indicative content

Term 1 will focus upon domestic construction methods:
• Simple structures - building sites and shallow foundations, the properties of concrete, reinforcement, brickwork and blockwork.
• Typical traditional construction detailing such as cavity wall construction including use of damp proofing membranes and cavity wall ties etc.
• Typical roofing details and structures from different pitch roofs and rafter construction as well as flat roof configurations. Focus will also be put of the roof coverings themselves including typical detailing and alternative materials.
• Domestic construction detailing focusing on much of the above items
• Materials science of the basic items (eg timber loadings), touching on construction and services
• Toward the end f the semester focus will move to steelwork and precast concrete components as well as timber framing and SIPS panel systems, etc

Term 2 will focus upon domestic and commercial buildings and building services:
• Construction of steelwork, concrete framed and timber framed structures. Piling, underpinning and general groundworks including drainage.
• Material Science will look at water supply and drainage, electricity supply and safety, daylight, moisture and ventilation, acoustics
• Comfort and the internal environment
• Heating systems
• Building fabric
• Prefabrication and construction systems
• Sustainable buildings
• Toward the end of the semester focus will be put on Passivhaus and the green agenda as well as other energy saving technologies in preparation for the sustainability module taken in the second stage.

Teaching and learning activity

Teaching will comprise weekly lectures and complementary tutorials providing students with the opportunity to test their understanding of each subject area. Formative assignments will be undertaken within tutorials and peer group assessment utilised.
