Aims

• To increase students’ employability by developing personal, communication and career management skills
• To develop students’ skills for life‐long learning
• To induct and support the students in using the university’s systems and processes effectively
• To increase students’ ability to benefit from the academic learning process

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1. Identify their personal strengths and weaknesses in relation to the expectations of potential employers
2. Develop the ability to identify appropriate actions they might take to enhance their personal qualities and competences in relation to their life and their career
3. Develop the ability to work independently and in groups
4. Reflect on the learning they gain from personal experience and academic study
5. Develop skills which will increase their ability to offer employers value in employment
6. Develop the ability to present themselves to employers as suitable potential employees
7. Use a variety of information sources, both working in their learning groups and independently on their assessments.
8. Plan, organise and structure work that is coherent, fluent and grammatically accurate
9. Use the Harvard referencing system for all academic work; demonstrate verbal and written reasoning and fluency, propose and support an argument.
10. Execute effective audio/visual presentations for a variety of purposes
11. Write effectively using academic and business conventions such as essays, formal reports and business plans

Indicative content

The course will draws on a variety of materials on various types of academic writing, employability skills and principles of team work.

Teaching and learning activity

Lectures, seminars and guided reading, presentations, project based activity. The course will make use of web-based resources such as Moodle to expose students to relevant information before sessions via video links and reading, interactive lectures and student centred tutorials will give students an opportunity for active contributions and action led learning.

Assessment

Portfolio 1 - 50% weighting, 40% pass mark, learning outcomes 1 - 11.
