Specification

Pre and co requisites

The course is intended as a continuation of course two, and therefore successful completion of course two is sufficient qualification for entry to course three. Alternatively, the student at GCSE level or AS level or CEFR (A2), and with recent experience of using the language, may be suited to this course. Such a student may be able to use a basic range of language, sufficient for familiar situations, but with many lapses in accuracy, fluency, appropriateness and organisation.

Aims

i) to enable the student to use basic and more complex forms of the language in both formal and informal contexts; ii) to enable the student to develop lexical and grammatical range appropriate to both formal and informal contexts; iii) to develop an awareness of style and register in the language; iv) to enhance understanding of the structure of the language, and help the student to apply grammatical understanding to develop competence in the language; v) to foster the confidence and enthusiasm to engage in further language learning; vi) to help students to develop strategies for self-assessment and encourage autonomy in language learning.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student will reach the equivalent of the B1 level of the CEFR.

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 use a range of language functions to communicate orally and in writing in both social and professional environments
2 demonstrate comprehension of foreign language texts by communicating gist and detail in the target language
3 prepare and understand business correspondence
4 comprehend and summarise French documents in English

To be indicated to students of French by the Language Course co-ordinator at the start of the semester.

Teaching and learning activity

To ensure maximum accessibility to the programme students are required to attend a two hour block and one hour conversation class plus language portfolio workshop.

Assessment

Exam - 50% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning outcomes 1-4.
Outline Details - 2 hour end of year exam assessing reading and writing skills.

Portfolio - 25% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning outcomes 1-4.
Outline Details - assessing all four skills (Oral, Listening, Writing and Reading).

Oral - 25% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning outcomes 1,2.
Outline Details - In class assessment of listening and speaking skills.

Students are not required to pass all components in order to pass the course.
