Aims

The aim of this course is to help participants to understand the importance of human resource in the tourism and hospitality industries and develop their knowledge and skills in its management. Tourism and hospitality industries are considered to be a people industry, in which human resource play a major role in developing and delivering a range of services and products. Effective management of human resource is vital to improving quality and achieving competitiveness for tourism and hospitality businesses. Knowledge, skills and competence in managing human resources are essential for graduates in tourism and hospitality management to become successful leaders in their professional career. This course will also help students develop skills in dealing with specific issues in managing human resource in the tourism and hospitality sector.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Evaluate the importance of human resource and its efficient management in the tourism and hospitality industries
2 Critically analyse and deal with issues in managing human resource in the tourism and hospitality industries

Teaching and learning activity

The course will employ a variety of teaching and learning methods such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, case study analysis, guest lectures, directed reading and independent reading and research. Structured self-study will be facilitated with help of the Moodle. Field visits will be organised to familiarise students with practical aspects of managing tourism businesses. The overall teaching and learning strategy is designed to emphasise a student-centred approach to foster the active and reflective engagement of students in the learning process.

Assessment

Essay 100% weighting, 40% pass mark, learning outcomes 2 & 3.
Outline Details - An individual essay analysing techniques and practices in human resources in a tourism or a hospitality organisations. 3000 words.

Formative Assessment - A group presentation on managing people in a tourism or hospitality organisation. 0% weighing.
