Aims

This course is an introductory course in law, designed to equip students with the requisite knowledge
and skills to study law throughout their programme.

Learning outcomes

On completing this course successfully you will be able to:
 Understand the mechanics of the Legal system of England and Wales
 Understand what a contract is, and how it is formed.
 Explain what a term of a contract is, and distinguish between different types of term
 Appreciate the role the law of tort plays in business liability
 Understand the tort of negligence
 Appreciate the legal significance of a company and a partnership.

Indicative content

 The legal system of England and Wales
 Formation of the contract
 Terms ‐ express and implied, conditions and warranties
 Exclusion clauses
 The Law of Torts: negligence (including negligent misstatement)
 Remedies
 Introduction to the law relating to companies and partnerships

Assessment

Coursework 1 - 20%. Pass mark 40%. 1000 words. An essay/scenario based question on the early parts of the course, in particular the English legal system and the formation of a contract.

Coursework 2 - 30%. Pass mark 40%. 1500 words. Essay/scenario question based on contract/tort.

Exam - 50% weighting. Pass mark 40%. 2 hours. Two questions on topics not previously assessed by coursework.
