Overview

If you have the ability but not the qualifications, an extended degree is the first step to graduation. This four-year programme is identical to the three-year degree, but includes a foundation year, and has a lower entry tariff. This programme will give you a detailed study of human health and disease, focusing on the pathogenesis (mechanism) of disease, diagnostic pathway and therapeutic intervention. It will prepare you for careers in medical diagnostic and research environments.

Foundation year

The foundation year is designed to give you:

  • A thorough introduction to chemistry and to biology
  • A thorough introduction to biochemistry and to pharmacology
  • Fundamentals of energy, life and resources 
  • Fundamentals of nutrition and health
  • Essential skills for science
  • Improved mathematics
  • Laboratory practice.

Degree structure

Approximately a quarter of the programme is taken up with practical-based courses that will build your skills in this area. You will go on to take skills and theoretical development to more advanced levels. You can also carry out an independent research project that comprises one quarter of your final-year study. 

Employability

This programme will advance your academic, professional and laboratory skills for employment in medical diagnostic or research environments. You will develop the knowledge and understanding you require to apply scientific theory to practice. You will also develop transferable skills in information technology, communication, numeracy, problem solving and case study analysis.
