Claire AxcellGreenwich midwifery undergraduate Claire Axcell has won a prestigious national award.

She has been named Student Midwife of the Year by the British Journal of Midwifery at its annual Practice Awards, which recognise outstanding commitment, efforts and achievements in the profession.

This success marks double honours for the University of Greenwich as another of its students, Heidi Stone, won the award last year.

Claire, who is in the second year of her Midwifery BSc degree, was formerly a police officer. A mother of two, she says it was the outstanding care she received following the birth of her first child that rekindled her childhood dream of becoming a midwife herself.

"I was impressed by the support I was shown, and from day one of my training I've tried to pass this on – to treat others as I would like to be treated myself," she says. "I've really immersed myself in this profession and I aim to do anything I can, however small, to help make a difference to someone's life."

Claire, who is currently completing her clinical practice at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, had warm praise for her tutors at Greenwich. "They've been amazingly helpful and always take the time to support and advise me. I've been able to go to them with any issues, and I could not have asked for better," she adds.

Vikki Coleman, the trust's Midwifery Practice Based Clinical Facilitator, nominated Claire for the award. "She will become a fabulous midwife and it is a privilege to be able to observe her journey towards this," she says. "Claire has shown dedication in expanding her own knowledge, sharing it with others, and been a fantastic advocate for the university and the hospital."

The nomination was supported by Mandy Stevenson, Midwifery Programme Leader, and Liz Gale, Midwifery Lecturer, from the university's Faculty of Education & Health

Midwifery and nursing education at Greenwich is viewed as among the best in the London. It has scored 100 per cent for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years, and was ranked top in London for student satisfaction by the Complete University Guide 2017.
