Drill HallThe student experience at three leading universities in London, Kent and Europe is being enhanced with the launch of a ground-breaking library management system which will transform the way they engage with and use library services.

This innovative project saw the universities of Greenwich, Kent and Canterbury Christ Church joining forces to jointly procure a single Unified Library Management System. Supplied by SirsiDynix, the new system supports library services across 12 campus and study centres including the unique, shared Drill Hall Library at the Medway Campus.

The system will enable the universities to improve their library services, benefiting thousands of students each day. Borrowing is both fairer and more responsive to peaks in demand for popular items, as items on loan will be automatically renewed unless reserved by another person, minimising fines incurred.

Finding books is now easier, and there is improved access to electronic resources, books and the universities' special collections of unique and distinctive materials. The system will help streamline the purchasing of resources, making them more discoverable and aid in the management of library accounts, offering significant efficiencies.

"By working together we can deliver more effective, efficient and sustainable services and also benefit from each other's expertise, greatly increase our buying power, share data and best practice," says Keith Yates, who led the project on behalf of the universities. "It is thought to be the first collaboration of its kind in UK academic libraries."

The three institutions also form Universities at Medway, a unique partnership based at a shared campus at Chatham Maritime, which has seen student numbers grow to more than 9,000. The Drill Hall Library at the Medway Campus is used by students from all three universities and will be an integral part of the new unified system.

Other library sites to adopt the shared system include Stockwell Street and Avery Hill (University of Greenwich), The Templeman and Tonbridge libraries (University of Kent) and Augustine House, Salomons and Broadstairs (Canterbury Christ Church University).
