Previous Events:

  • December 2015: The BHRE group hosted two events on human and environmental conditions in the electronics industry. The first was 'Behind your Screen', a public event with a panel of speakers, and the second was 'Socially Responsible Public Procurement of Electronic Products', an all day symposium. Both events featured a variety of speakers from all over the globe, and were well attended and an overall success. We would like to thank our speakers and funders for making the events possible.
  • October 2015: Opi Outhwaite is attending the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN) Research Conference in Copenhagen. As part of the Special Interest Group on Business and Human Rights she will present the paper Human Rights in Global Supply Chains: Corporate Social Responsibility and Public Procurement in the European Union (Opi Outhwaite and Olga Martin Ortega)
  • September 2015: Dr Olga Martin-Ortega has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the London Universities Purchasing Consortium (LUPC) and joined the Board in her first meeting this September.
  • July 2015: Opi Outhwaite has been meeting with monitoring and labour organisations in the USA. This work forms the basis of a pilot project being undertaken by Dr Outhwaite and Dr Martin-Ortega focussing on access to remedies and the use of grievance mechanisms for supply chain workers.
  • July 2015: William Rook, a PhD student in the research group, successfully completed his transfer and is visiting Ghana this summer as part of his work on the mining industries and local communities in Africa. Veronica Torres successfully completed her PhD registration and will be visiting Colombia continuing her work on Transnational Corporations, Land and Local Communities.
  • June 2015: The article 'Buying power and human rights in the supply chain: legal options for socially responsible public procurement of electronic good' (Olga Martin Ortega, Opi Outhwaite and William Rook) was published in the International Journal of Human Rights.
  • June 2015: Dr Opi Outhwaite's article 'Environmental Offences: Finally Making the Polluter Pay?' was published in the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law e-journal. 
  • June 2015: Dr Opi Outhwaite has taken up the role of Managing Editor at the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law journal.
  • May 2015: Olga and Opi's article for Linked, the magazine of the London Universities Purchasing Consortium, explains how responsible purchasing of electronics can improve labour conditions in global supply chains.
  • January 2015: The BHRE has published the Policy Paper, Promoting responsible electronics supply chains through public procurement

  • October 2014: Dr Olga Martin-Ortega presented the paper "La Diligencia Debida de las Empresas en Materia de Derechos Humanos: Un Nuevo Esta╠ündar Para una Nueva Responsabilidad" at the I Congreso Nacional de Investigacion sobre Empresas y Derechos Humanos" in Murcia, Spain (21-22 October 2014).
  • September 2014: Members of the BHRE Research Group presented a paper at the European Society of International Law Biannual Conference. The team presented the paper: Martin-Ortega, O. and Outhwaite, O. and Rook, W., Business, Human Rights and Public Procurement: Legal options for the procurement of responsibly manufactured electronics, at the 3rd Research Workshop of the Interest Group on Business and Human Rights of the European Society of International Law (Vienna, 4- 6 September 2014).
  • June 2014: BHRE hosted a workshop on 'Socially Responsible Public Procurement' at University of Greenwich on 27 June. The workshop was attended by procurement and sustainability professionals from several London Boroughs as well as key organisations such as LUPC, the Fair-Trade Foundation and Transport for London.
  • November 2013: Olga Martin-Ortega presented the paper "Conflict minerals and due diligence" at the International Conference on Implementation of Business and Human Rights organised at the University of Sevilla, Spain (4-7 November 2013).
  • May 2013: Olga Martin-Ortega organised the 2nd Research Workshop of the European Society of International Law Interest Group on Business and Human Rights in Amsterdam (23-24 May 2013).
  • January 2013: Olga Martin-Ortega presented the paper "Conflict Minerals and Corporate Human Rights Due Diligence" at the International Research Conference Companies, conflict and human rights , International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) in Barcelona (17- 18 January 2013).
