Covid-19 Hardship Fund

The Covid-19 Hardship Fund was set up to provide immediate relief to students worst affected by campus closures. The issues brought on by Covid-19 are wide ranging. From not having the proper equipment to study at home to some students facing homelessness, it is clear that the need to provide support goes way beyond what could have been imagined earlier this year. With a generous £19,000 donation from Santander Universities UK we were able to provide a safety net to over 50 students in the last academic year.

University life during Covid-19

As the buildings were closed, essential program software became unavailable and group work relied heavily on having a certain degree of tech at home. I was living in halls during lockdown so sourcing a spare computer was quite difficult, with social distancing and conflicting schedules meaning that borrowing from peers was not an option. Fortunately my lecturer referred me to this scheme, without this I wouldn’t have been able to complete my year at all.

Receiving the Award

Receiving a laptop allowed me to sit my exams and I have used it for uploading software that my original computer doesn’t allow me to do. This has made me realise even more that Greenwich fully supports students as throughout this situation my lecturers and other teams have been responding to my emails with various options to help me. It has made me feel less stressed about the current situation knowing that I will be able to complete my work and not have additional pressures during my hand-ins and exams. I have felt totally supported by Greenwich.

Final year preparation

In order to keep myself busy since the term ended, I started reading different genres of books to expand upon my vocabulary and writing styles. In addition, I used the laptop provided from the university to practice my skills on Solidworks. With the university providing a loan laptop I managed to pick up new skills, that can be applied for the new university year.

I feel prepared and excited for the final year and cannot wait to get working in the industry. Though it has been a strange summer, I look forward to seeing some of my old friends and welcome new challenges. The laptop definitely helped in practising my Solidworks skills and allowed me to prepare myself for the group design project in my final year. I would like to thank Santander Universities and the University of Greenwich for helping me in these difficult times.
