TLDRoffon

The gift of £165,000 over four years from John Maynard will support student internships, PhD scholarships and new starters.

We’re delighted to announce a new fundraising agreement with Greenwich graduate John Maynard. The new gift builds upon the successful History Research Group and Visionary Scholarships, which we launched with John’s support in 2020, and will support Greenwich students in three key areas:

  • History Research Group Scholarship to support one four-year PhD scholarship, covering tuition fees and bursary
  • Visionary Scholarship supporting two students per year who apply to study at Greenwich via the Schools Outreach Programme
  • Internships at Greenwich supporting student employability via an internships programme

Continuation of, and in increase in the value of, the History Research Group and Visionary Scholarships, in addition to the new internships programme, sit at the core of the university’s commitment to an Education Without Boundaries.

John graduated from Greenwich in 2017 with a MA in History. He truly appreciated the enthusiasm, knowledge and commitment of Greenwich’s teaching staff and found interacting with students again, after 50 years away from study, an enlightening and refreshing experience. History Research Group Scholarship

Sebastian Rose was the first recipient of the History Research Group Scholarship in 2020. His research focuses on a history of the Indo-European Telegraph Department in Iran and the Persian Gulf in the late nineteenth early twentieth century. On the impact of the award, Sebastian remarks:

“John and the History Research Group’s support has been indispensable to my academic development. The generosity of the scholarship, and the supportive environment of the History Research Group has offered me a unique opportunity to pursue my research with financial, institutional, and intellectual support. Crucially, this has meant that I have been able to access important resources and networks that have been invaluable to the development of my project.”

The continuation of the Scholarship will enable more PhD candidates to undertake research that has an impact at a local, national, and international level. Gavin Rand, Associate Professor of History at the university and convenor of the History Research Group at Greenwich says:

“This second scholarship will enable us to continue growing the postgraduate research community here at Greenwich. It will provide a fantastic opportunity for someone to develop an original and important research project. Sebastian’s work demonstrates how valuable this funding is, and we are delighted to be able offer fully funded scholarship and bursary.”

Visionary Scholarship

Joshua Feria De La Torre and Isobel McKay were the first recipients of the Visionary Scholarship in 2020, awarded to first-year students who have overcome challenges to gain their places at university through the Schools Outreach programme.

In 2023, the Scholarship will increase to £5,750 per student (from £5,000) and will continue to support new students who have joined from our outreach network of schools and colleges.

Internships at Greenwich

The new agreement will provide more internship opportunities for students through the Employability Service  at University of Greenwich. On the announcement of funding for the programme, Gianna Harvey-Brewin, Associate Director Employability and Apprenticeships said:

“We are so grateful for this donation to support our students into paid experience opportunities. Not only do these internships help our students to explore career paths and develop their skills and professional networks, but many of our students go on to secure permanent roles after these experiences. This donation allows us to offer paid opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise exist, and the impact will be felt for years to come – thank you!”

The Employability Service provides a range of services and tools for students throughout their time at Greenwich and for two years after they complete their studies, including careers advice, mentoring, internships, jobs fairs, and lots more.
