Accounting academics co-organise successful conference in Hanoi

TLDRoffon

Members of the Accounting and Finance team arranged and participated in a sustainable development conference in Vietnam that attracted delegates from around the world.

The 'Sustainable Economic and Business Development in the context of Globalization' conference took place in Hanoi in November 2018.
It was co-organised with a longstanding international partner – the Academy of Finance (AOF) in Vietnam.
The event was a great success, with over 400 delegates attending from over a dozen countries and the subsequent publication of the conference proceedings.

Opportunities and risks of globalisation

Among the keynote speakers was Professor Alex Stojanovic, Head of Department of Accounting and Finance and co-director of PEGFA (the Institute of Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability) at the University of Greenwich.

In his keynote address, he emphasised the opportunities and risks of globalisation, the global nature of finance, and the interconnectedness and interdependence of countries engaged in international trade.

Ten years on from the Global Financial Crisis, regulation has forced banks to mitigate risk and operate more safely. Now, the field is split between those looking to relax the rules and encourage growth and those who promote caution, monitoring and continued assessment of new risks.

Despite a broadly positive story for globalisation in terms of trade and free movement, there remains concern that nation states might act in isolation to future crises rather than co-ordinate an effective global response.
Stojanovic championed the institutions' work in knowledge sharing, education and research co-operation. He discussed the work that PEGFA carries out in the areas of international development, inequalities, economic and corporate governance and risk management and accountability.

Professor Stojanovic was joined by Professor Petros Ietromonachou, Head of Department for Systems Management and Strategy, and Mr Jon Sibson, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Business at the University.

Knowledge Sharing

Knowledge sharing and international research collaborations are at the heart of PEGFA's ethos and activity.

University of Greenwich academics not only assist partner institutions with their curriculum development and delivery, they also proactively seek collaboration opportunities for research projects and activities.

The SEBDM Conference is a positive example of this collaboration in action, with the Academy of Finance in Hanoi.

The Academy celebrated its 55th year in 2018. It adopted the name in 2001 as the result of a merger of three institutions: Hanoi University of Finance and Accounting, Institute of Financial Research and Centre of Financial Cadre Training.
