Discussing criminology topics from a different point of view with the Inside Out Prison Exchange Programme

TLDRoffon

The Inside Out Prison Exchange Programme is the international foundation for an innovative prison-based module for BA Criminology and BSc Criminology and Criminal Psychology students at level 5.

Known as 'Inside and Outside Perspectives on Criminology and Criminal Justice' it is the only module on the programmes that is taught inside HMP Downview, a women's prison in Surrey.

The module, referred to as Inside Out, recruits an equal mix of 'inside' students, women incarcerated at HMP Downview and 'outside' students, level 5 University of Greenwich students, all of whom undertake an application process to secure their place. The module is run by members of the criminology teaching team Dr Giulia Zampini and Dr Camille Stengel, and Dr Linnéa Österman.

Following the completion of the module last year, a closing ceremony provided an opportunity to celebrate, reflect and contemplate how the module will continue to create impact in the future. Both inside and outside students provided poignant feedback about their experience on the module last year. One outside student explained the value of

having the possibility to discuss criminology topics from a different point of view, from people who directly lived it. It deeply opened up my mind, my perspectives and the way I look at criminality.

Similarly, an inside student elaborated on how the module encouraged diverse opinions in the classroom:

The opportunity given was something I will treasure forever for the rest of my life. Having group debates and discussions made me believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The sky is the limit and another barrier broken, moving from being a radical to a liberal. This has made me think outside of the box. This kept me busy and focused.
