Temporary changes to the Academic Regulations to support your assessments

TLDRoffon

Supporting your learning remains our top priority. We intend to progress and graduate as many students as possible over the coming weeks.

We are putting in place some temporary changes to our Academic Regulations for taught awards for the 2019-20 academic year to support the university's no detriment policy and ensure your academic performance does not suffer during this period of disruption. These changes cover the period from the start of lockdown (23 March 2020) to the end of the 2019-20 academic year (i.e. the summer assessment period).

The sections of the Regulations that have been amended cover:

  • Compensation and condonement: this means that where you have not attained a pass grade for an individual module, the Progression and Award Board has the discretion to award credit without reassessment.
  • Progression with Intermediate Standing (PI): this means that you are permitted to progress to the next stage of your programme carrying up to a specified number of credits of failure. Reassessment in the failed module(s) will be in addition to the requirements of the subsequent stage.

For full details of the changes, please read the complete wording of the revised sections, which can be found here.

These changes allow the Progression and Award Boards greater flexibility in deciding how and when you are able to retrieve any assessments that you have not passed this year, or they may decide that it is not necessary for you to retrieve the failed assessment. You do not need to do anything in relation to these changes, they are part of the range of decisions available within the Academic Regulations that can be applied by your Progression and Award Board.

It is important though that you understand the application and the limitations of these changes:

  • Compensation, condonement and PI are discretionary decisions available to Progression and Award Boards (PABs) based on your overall profile of marks for the whole academic year - this means that the PAB will use their judgement to decide on the best way for each individual student to successfully progress with or complete their studies based on all contributing factors.
  • If you are studying a module or on a programme accredited by a Professional, Statutory or Regulatory Body (PSRB), such as nursing or psychology, it may not be possible for the PAB to implement some or all of the temporary changes as PSRB requirements take precedent.
  • No decisions on Progression with Intermediate Standing will be made until after the resit period.
