Virtual Celebrations October 2020

Celebrations with students from the Faculty of Education, Health & Human Sciences scheduled to attend ceremonies this October.

It is with great reluctance that we have taken the decision to postpone our Graduation Awards Ceremonies scheduled for October 2020 due to the ongoing situation with Coronavirus. We have made this decision to allow you, your families and supporters to plan.

We know that you will be disappointed and that the Awards Ceremonies are the culmination of all your hard work, and we remain committed to celebrating your achievements in person as soon as possible and in line with the government guidance on public events.

We know that a virtual celebration isn't a replacement for attending a Graduation Ceremony, but we would like to take the opportunity to celebrate with those students from the Faculty of Education, Health & Human Sciences scheduled to attend ceremonies this October.

We will be holding online celebrations on the following dates for those graduates that were due to attend in October 2020.

We will contact all eligible students, via their personal email address, week commencing the 7th September. This email will provide details of these events and instructions on how to register attendance. For further details please read our FAQs below.

The university formally celebrates the success of its graduates at public Awards Ceremonies. The administration of the ceremonies involves the organisation and processing of personal data of large numbers of people, both internal and external to the university.

Personal data is processed prior to the ceremony, on the ceremony day and, to a limited extent, following the ceremony. This includes the marketing of the ceremony to the students and the receipt of data from the students regarding attendance and ticket requirements.

On the day of the ceremony, the programme will list the names and the Faculties of all graduates attending the ceremony. Degree classifications are not published. The public may order souvenir DVDs of the ceremony, official photographers are available for graduate and family photographs, and live Internet broadcasts of the ceremony will take place and will be available to view afterwards.

Virtual online ceremonies will be broadcast via the internet and will be available to view online after the event.

Graduates should be aware that:

  • At the ceremonies, names will be announced without classification and each ceremony will be recorded.
  • The publication of personal data in Awards Ceremony programmes, DVDs and, if applicable, on the Internet is regarded as a public task of the university. By participating in this public event, graduates understand that their name and image will be publicly available within the context of the ceremony.
  • University staff will not disclose any details about an individual graduate, including time or date of ceremony, to any third party, nor will university staff process any requests for awards ceremony tickets from a third party. The student should make all requests for guest tickets.
  • In the case of virtual online ceremonies graduate names will be shared with our video streaming and production service provider for the purposes of ceremony organisation.
  • Where it is intended to use photographs of individual graduates to advertise future Awards Ceremonies, consent will be obtained. However, for general crowd shots of people at a public event such as an Award Ceremony, the consent of individuals will not be sought.

Does this virtual ceremony replace an on-campus ceremony?

No. We understand that graduation is an important day for our students. We are continuing to plan to hold rescheduled graduation ceremonies on campus as soon as it is safe, and once the social distancing guidelines have been lifted.

How do I get involved?

Eligible graduates will be contacted via their University and registered personal email addresses with full details on how to register for the event.

What if I don't want to attend. Can I still attend a on-campus ceremony?

Attendance is optional and does not affect your eligibility to attend any future on-campus ceremonies. If you attend the virtual ceremony you can still attend any rescheduled ceremonies.

What will happen at the ceremony?

During the virtual ceremony there will be an opportunity for you to appear live on screen with your graduating classmates and an opportunity for you and your family and friends to watch the ceremony live. Once the registration process is complete, we will contact you with detailed joining instructions and the specific time of your ceremony. We will not be able to confirm times before this unfortunately.

How long will the ceremony be?

Approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Will it be recorded?

Yes, the ceremony will be available to view online afterwards. Family & friends are able to view the ceremony live via the Universities Youtube channel.

Is there any cost to attend?

There is no cost to take part.

Can I wear Academic Dress?

There is no requirement to wear Academic Dress for the virtual ceremonies, but if you would like to hire it for the day, Ede and Ravenscroft are offering discounted rates.
