Andy Freeman is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and Sport in the Department of Secondary Education, LLTE and PE & Sport at the University of Greenwich.

Andy joined the university in 2005 as a Senior Lecturer on the BA Hons PE & Sport programme at levels four, five and six, then also as Subject Leader (in 2012) on the PGCE Physical Education (Secondary) ITE programme.

He achieved a first degree in Movement Studies from the University of London in 1981 and successfully completed an MSc Physical Education at Loughborough University in 2005. During this time he also taught Physical Education in secondary schools across Essex for 24 years, taking interest in the early development of examination courses in Physical Education and involved in the first GCSE and A Level opportunities for secondary school pupils in this country.

Becoming Head of Physical Education in Secondary Schools, created responsibility for training newly qualified teachers and inspired his move to the University of Greenwich to train teachers. Since 2012, his work in developing the Physical Education teachers of the future is predicated around the development of specific philosophical approaches to the holistic development of children and young people, through physical activity and promoting a wider role for physical education in secondary schools. He has also maintained a strong interest in the development of the national curriculum for physical education.

Some of his teaching areas include sociology; philosophy and policy; research methods in physical education; analysing performance; teaching Physical Education; sports policy and development; enhancing performance; monitoring and evaluating performance; contemporary issues in sports coaching; sociologically and pedagogically-based independent study supervision; subject knowledge and pedagogy; games outdoor education and athletics.
