The purpose of this course is to allow students working in industry to receive credit for the experiential learning they have gained through their work.

Learning outcomes

There are no predefined course specific learning outcomes. Before a student starts this course s/he will negotiate a learning contract with the programme leader and the industrial supervisor. The learning contract will detail the learning outcomes and the professional skills, which will be gained. A set of guidelines will be provided to assist in the design of the learning outcomes.

There is no pre-determined syllabus for this course.

Teaching and learning activity

No formal lectures or tutorials are given. Guidance will be given on report writing and general presentation skills.


The student will be expected to produce a portfolio describing in detail the experience gained and discussing how the agreed learning outcomes were met.
The portfolio will be assessed by the programme leader or nominee and independently by another tutor.

Portfolio - 70%
Oral presentation or Viva voce - 30%

The external examiner will be able to inspect the portfolio, including the agreed learning outcomes and may be invited to participate in the viva voce or oral presentation.
