If you support teaching and learning, this foundation degree is a recognised qualification and a gateway to teacher training.
This foundation degree is for workers and volunteers in 'paraprofessional' areas who support teaching and learning. This may be in classrooms as learning support assistants or teaching assistants, or in related roles, such as learning mentors linked to schools or colleges.
Modules explore subjects such as the world of education, ways of supporting learners with additional educational needs, and psychological, social and emotional influences on behaviour.

Entry requirements
- GCSEs - grades A*-C/9 - 4 in English and maths or Level 2 equivalent
- A Level in a relevant subject or Level 3 equivalent
- We will accept T Levels for entry onto our higher education courses, providing they meet our entry requirements
- You must be working (either paid or voluntary) in an appropriate school provision for two days per week throughout the 2 years of the program (300 hours per year)
- Enhanced DBS clearance which is needed for your work/placement when undertaking the course.
- Mature students without formal qualifications may be considered as a result of life and work experience following an entry test.
If you do not have the above UCAS/GCSE requirements but you are a mature student, have appropriate experience, specific knowledge or industry-based qualifications, your application will be welcomed and still considered on case to case basis.

How you will learn
Covid safe teaching and learning

Teaching
Learning takes place through a combination of timetabled learning and independent study.
Seminars enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials.

Class sizes
Class sizes vary by module. Lectures are normally attended by larger groups, and seminars/tutorials by smaller groups. This can vary more widely for modules that are shared between degrees. All students will have opportunities for 1-to-1 time with their tutors.
Overall workload
If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.
Each module you study towards this degree is worth 15 or 30 credits. These represent around 150 or 300 study hours respectively. If you receive 100 contact hours for a 30-credit module, you should expect to commit 200 hours to independent study to complete it successfully.
Assessment
Students are assessed through a combination of course work, exams and practical assessment where relevant. You can view more information about how each module on this course is assessed within our 'What you will study' section.
Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assignments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.
Feedback summary
University policy is to give feedback on assignments within 15 working days of the coursework submission date. Examination results will be available within 28 days.

Academic skills and study support
We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.
Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
You can also participate in the Erasmus+ student exchange course to spend a year abroad. Benefit from international experience and develop proficiency in a European language.
