How to change your password

Please note that this method of password reset will work for staff, student and affiliate accounts.

If your University IT account password has expired, or you wish to update your password before it expires, please go to

The look and feel of these pages will vary depending on the device you are using, but will work on desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile phones from within or outside the University.

Password update

  • You will be prompted to enter your username and current / expired password.
  • Once you have entered your current credentials, click on Submit.

If you have entered valid details (the correct username / password and  matching new passwords which meet the complex password criteria, see "Acceptable Passwords " below ) your account will be updated and the new password become active for 120 days.

Staff and students will now be able to check their password has successfully updated, by trying to login to - this time using their new password.  

You will be redirected to your Office 365 home page if your password has been updated.

Affiliate Account holders will need to return to the Portal to log in with their new password.


There may be a delay of up to 15 minutes before you can use your new password to access the Portal.

Please note that once you have synchronised your password through this process, you must then use the new password to access your Outlook e-mail account, Desktop login, the Portal, eduroam wireless network and if you are accessing e-mail via PDAs, iPhones, Tablets, Blackberries etc.

Acceptable passwords

  • The password cannot contain any combination of your first name, last name or your username.
  • You cannot reset your university password to one that you have used previously.
  • The password must be at least 8 characters long and include 3 of the following:
    • Upper case letter/s
    • Lower case letter/s
    • Number/s
    • Non-alphanumeric (a character that is neither a number or letter) eg.  ! , . = < > ' " : ; ? / { } [ ] ~ - \ ( ) _ + $ % ^ *
    • Please do NOT use the ¬, | , £, €, @, & or # signs as several University systems cannot currently support them in passwords 

Help! Remembering your password

  • Passwords should never be written down or stored on-line. Try to create passwords that can be easily remembered. One way to do this is create a password based on a song title, affirmation, or other phrase. For example, the phrase might be: "This Might Be One Way To Remember!" and the password could be: Tmbowtr! 
  • Adding additional changes will enhance you password: Common tricks include using numbers for words / letters.  Using this technique, your password would now be:  Tmb1w2r!
  • Another method to add complexity would be to add a couple of letters / numbers / symbols to the start and end of your password: This would now leave your password as:  $=Tmb1w2r!=$

Outlook configuration

If you use the full Outlook client on your home / personal PC you will need to reconfigure Outlook on that PC with your new password. The same applies for any mobile device you may be using.
