Aims

1) To introduce to students some basic concepts related to accounting, banking and finance used modern organisations
2) To build their competence and knowledge of how these are employed in data, statements and information used to communicate to various stakeholders both within and outside the organisation.
3) To enhance students’ numeracy skills and confidence in working with financial information in non-finance roles and enhance their transferable skills in this area to enhance their employability

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

1 To understand the role of the finance function in organisation and introduce key accounting concepts: control, income, expenses, profit and loss, banking, investments, taxation, VAT, financial objectives and corporate governance.
2 To understand the role, use and messages communicated by key financial statements, annual report, profit & loss, balance sheet and cashflow
3 To understand the use and importance of management accounting and how to create a budget and the budgeting process and its connection to control, planning, business strategy, analysis and ratios and financial performance

Indicative content

• Basic principles, terminology and building blocks of accounting and financial control;
• Main financial statements, how they relate to one another and how they can be manipulated as useful management data;
• The contents and what, why, how and when - Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow
• Banks and their use by companies – interest, principle, charges, overdraft and loans
• Investments – what they are and how they used
• Taxation (Business and Personal), VAT and
• The company annual report

Teaching and learning activity

The module is to be delivered through a combination of acquisition, discussion, lectures, collaboration activities, tutorials, investigation, practice and production, using a mix of online, face to face and group activities.
Lecture – weekly 1 hr
Tutorial – weekly 1 hr

Assessment

Report 1: 30% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning Outcome: 1.
Outline Details: Short report with one case study scenario covering the indicative content from the first 5 weeks. 500 words.

Report 2: 70% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1, 2 & 3.
Outline Details: Three section report with case study scenario(s) covering the indicative content from all weeks. 1500 words.

Formative Assessment: Multiple choice, true/false, and match statement questions will be provided after each week to test the topics covered in that week. In-class discussions of cases linked to the indicative content.
