Aims

The main aim of the module is to extend the student’s knowledge and understanding of historical background, concepts and theories in the study of personality and individual differences including intelligence and psychometric testing. A second aim is to develop the student’s understanding of the relevance of these concepts and theories to applied situations in organisations and counselling. A third aim is to extend the student’s ability to critically evaluate the range of methodological approaches used in the study of individual differences and psychological testing. A fourth aim is to develop the student’s skills in the critical evaluation of current research in this area.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Understand the historical context of the study of personality, individual differences and intelligence.
2. Analyse the different contemporary approaches and theories that relate to understanding of personality, individual differences and intelligence.
3. Understand the range of psychological tests available and the processes of measuring their validity and reliability.
4. Critically evaluate the role of heredity and environment in shaping personality, intelligence and mood.
5. Understand how theories and methods covered within the module can be applied in organisational and therapeutic contexts.
6. Develop an understanding of the organisations and career paths that use the theories and methods covered within the module.

Indicative content

Examples of topics included in the module are: Historical issues, theoretical perspectives and concepts in the study of human diversity; psychological testing, concepts of validity and reliability; assessment of personality and mental abilities; the nature of intelligence; genetic and environmental influences on intelligence and personality; differences in cognitive styles, motivation, emotion, mood and creativity; health, well-being and positive psychology.

Teaching and learning activity

Lectures involving teacher-oriented presentations, student-oriented small tasks, brief discussions and quizzes. Seminars involving student-led work and group-based presentations of this work.

Assessment

Exam: 100% weighting, 40% pass mark. Learning Outcomes: 1 to 6.Exam covering the content of the lectures and seminars (specific for the different programmes of study) marked in line with L6 standards.

Formative Assessment: Activities, small tasks and quizzes in preparation for the exam questions during lectures. Group concept and presentation work with feedback from instructor and peers in the seminars.
