Maria J Arche

Dr Maria J Arche
PhD

Associate Professor of Linguistics & Spanish and Director of the Centre for Research & Enterprise in Language (CREL)

Dr María J. Arche has a PhD in Theoretical Linguistics and Language Acquisition. Her research falls within the syntax-semantics interface focusing on Tense, Aspect, Argument Structure and copular verbs. She has studied these topics in the grammar of Spanish and has also investigated their crosslinguistic variation and acquisition.

Her doctoral dissertation was directed by Timothy Stowell (University of California, Los Angeles) and Violeta Demonte (Ortega y Gasset Institute of Madrid) and was published as Individuals in Time: Tense, aspect and the individual/stage distinction, in the collection Linguistics Today, John Benjamins Publishing (Amsterdam/Philadelphia) in 2006.

Later on she was a Visiting Professor in Linguistics at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Southampton in the UK for the Economic and Social Research Council funded project, Linguistic development in L2 Spanish: creation and analysis of a learner corpus (a.k.a. SPLLOC).

With an agenda motivated by her work, this project enjoyed of a second phase where Dr Arche acted as a project advisor. In these projects she has worked with Professors Rosamond Mitchell (University of Southampton), Florence Myles (University of Essex) and Drs Domínguez (University of Southampton) and Marsden (University of York).

She has been a visiting scholar at the department of Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in terms of 2010 and 2011 and is a member of an international coalition fostering projects about Grammatical Variation and Acquisition led by Dr Angeliek van Hout, funded by the Netherlands Academy of Science (2014-2017).

Recent works include the edition of two Special Issues: Arche, M.J. (ed.) 2014.Aspect across languages: semantic primitives, morpho-syntactic representation and the limits of cross-linguistic variation. Topic/Comment Special Issue for the journal Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, and Arche, M.J.,A. Fábregas and R. Marín (eds.) 2014. Aspect and argument structure of adjectives and participles, Special Issue for the journal Lingua (149, B) and the organization of the international conference Copulas Across Languages, University of Greenwich 2015, with a publication under preparation.

Research / Scholarly interests

  • Syntax and semantics interface
  • Linguistic theory
  • Language acquisition
  • Applied linguistics
  • Tense and aspect
  • Copular verbs

Dr Arche's work focuses on theoretical aspects of tense, aspect, adjectives and copular verbs in both adults' and learners' grammars. She uses theoretical analysis to identify what the precise issue for acquisition can be. Dr Arche has shown an interest in the different correspondences between semantics and morphology across languages, which has been key in her research interest on acquisition.

Dr Arche's current work on aspect and copular clauses has developed into subsequent projects on their acquisition and into PhD supervision in such areas.
