Mary McAlinden is Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Greenwich. Before joining the University Mary worked at Oxford Brookes University where she was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching. She has a wide range of Mathematics teaching experience in higher education both on specialist degree programmes as well as on programmes in other disciplines.

From 2011 - 2014 Mary was seconded to the Higher Education Academy as Discipline Lead for Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research. In this role she led a national programme of activities which included professional development events and discipline specific training for lecturers and postgraduates new to teaching in Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research. She organised and led discussion events designed to facilitate cross-sector dialogue in Mathematics and was also Project Lead for the Higher Education Academy STEM project: Skills in Mathematics and Statistics in the Disciplines and Tackling Transition.

Mary is currently a member of the Royal Society's Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education. She was a member of the Review Panel for the QAA Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research Subject Benchmark Statement and is Secretary of the Conference of Heads of Departments of Mathematical Sciences in the UK. She has served on professional body and other sector committees and has provided consultative input to external organisations. She has wide ranging interests in teaching and learning in the Mathematical Sciences and beyond.
