Principal Lecturer and Deputy Head of Department


Dr James Kennell is Deputy Head of the Department of Marketing, Events and Tourism at the University of Greenwich, and a Principal Lecturer in Tourism and Events.  He carries out research into the political economy of tourism and events, as well as into issues of policy and governance affecting these industries.  He has published a number of articles, book chapters and other papers on these topics and is a co-author of the core undergraduate textbook 'Events Management: An Introduction' (Routledge).

James joined the University in 2005. Since then he has been a postgraduate and undergraduate programme leader and taken responsibility for the development and review of a number of courses and programmes. James is the Executive Director of the London Office of the International Tourism Studies Association and a Fellow of the Tourism Society.

James is a regular contributor to a range of media and has been interviewed for BBC News, BBC Radio 4, The Guardian newspaper, China Daily and other outlets.

Research / Scholarly interests

Dr. Kennell’s main areas of research interests are in the intersection of tourism and and events with issues of politics and public policy and he has more than twenty years experience of consultancy, training and teaching in this field.  Throughout his career, James has carried out research into cultural heritage tourism, with a recent focus on dark tourism and the ways in which dark tourism and dark events can be understood from the perspectives of memory studies and the role of heritage in post-conflict societies.
