Sheila Barrett has a background in learning disability services and organisational behaviour. Sheila graduated in psychology at University College London and is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Sheila went on to become a qualified social worker at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College and later studied occupational psychology at Birkbeck College.

During the late 80's and early 90's, Sheila was a lecturer and service development consultant employed by South East Thames Regional Health Authority and the University of Kent at Canterbury where, as part of the team, she was  responsible for supporting the transition from institutions to community based models of care.

During that time Sheila developed training materials and a university based programme to train people to work with people with learning disabilities in very challenging situations. In 1998 Sheila moved to Ireland as a psychologist in learning disability services where alongside individual work, she developed and delivered staff training.

In 2001 Sheila returned to the UK to take up a post as Lecturer in Professional Development at the Open University where she wrote distance learning materials for health and social care professionals.

In 2003 Sheila moved to the Social Care Institute for Excellence and developed a leadership programme for health and social care executives. Sheila trained in consultancy and organisational development at the Tavistock Institute and executive coaching at the Tavistock Clinic.  Sheila is currently registered at on a PhD programme at Aston Business School and in the 3rd year of study.

  • Co Tutor for Organisational Behaviour and Leadership MA IHRM

External activities

  • External examiner at University of East Anglia

Sheila Barrett is at the qualifying report stage for research into mindfulness and authentic leadership in health care.

Shelia is currently working on a paper looking at different approaches to mindfulness.
