Julie Smith

Julie Smith BSc (Hons), RM, NMP

Senior Lecturer in Midwifery

Julie joined the University in 2021 after working as a clinical midwife for 20 years specialising in high risk antenatal care. She undertook the non-medical prescribing and third trimester ultrasound courses and utilised those skills to provide evidenced based care on an outpatient basis, keeping women at home for as long as possible when their pregnancies were complicated by conditions such as pre eclampsia and fetal growth restriction. She set up a midwifery-led hypertension clinic, caring for women with hypertensive disorders throughout pregnancy and the early postnatal period.

Julie had line management and service improvement responsibilities alongside her clinical role. She formulated clinical guidelines, undertook various audits and produced business plans to recommend and implement initiatives for service improvement and development, including the expansion and relocation of the maternity day assessment unit and introduction of outpatient induction of labour.

She was a supervisor of midwives facilitating birth planning for women who requested care outside of usual guidance and supported midwives in their clinical practice. Julie mentored and supported student midwives, nurses and medical students whilst educating and updating midwives, obstetricians and GPs. Julie is an active member of Action on Pre eclampsia and is a regular speaker on their national study days and conferences.
