Dr Patricia Ryan-Allen

Senior Lecturer, Mental Health Nursing

Dr Patricia Ryan-Allen is a Senior Lecturer for Mental Health Nursing in the Department of Family Care & Mental Health at the University of Greenwich.

Pat is a registered mental health nurse with a range of scholarly interests on the management of change, clinical mental health skills, developing therapeutic inter-personal skills and the physical health of people with severe mental illness.

Her Doctorate in Education investigated professional change and knowledge translation in mental health nursing, a case study on the Integration of a health policy into practice, and enabled her to advise in this area and have involvement in practice development on this basis.

Since joining the university as a senior lecturer in 2001, she has since led the Complex Needs pre-registration course and the (new) Physical Health and Medication Management course on the Mental Health Nursing programme as well as leading on MSc Advanced Practice.

Her other roles at the university is programme leader on pre-registration mental health nursing as well as responsibility for the shared pre-registration nursing curriculum with Canterbury Christ Church University.

Pat has designed and implemented the Observed Skills in Clinical Assessment (OSCE) approach to summative assessment of inter-personal skills for Year 3 student nurses, relating to mental health service users with complex mental health care needs.

She is a Personal tutor for pre-registration PGDip mental health students and in her capacity as research supervisor, regularly supports undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level students as well as registered health professionals. She is also Link tutor for mental health clinical areas in Kent and Medway Partnership Trust, and created a 'Vertical Support' group for those students.

She gained the GOLD award Senior Teaching Fellow and offers support to colleagues hoping to achieve the same.

Pat's research interests have studied the connection between severe psychotic disorders and metabolic syndrome. 

Together with a team from Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust she has also investigated the effectiveness of 'motivational interviewing' in relation to smoking cessation in people with serious mental disorders.
