Dr Alireza Esfahani joined the University of Greenwich in September 2021 as a lecturer of Computer Science in the School of Engineering and Science.

He received his PhD degree in Telecommunications from the MAP-TELE doctoral program, which is a joint venture of the University of Minho, University of Aveiro and University of Porto, Portugal in 2017 with distinction and merit. From July 2017 to May 2019, he gained working experience as a postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações in Portugal.

He is the author of more than 25 scientific works. In addition, he participated in writing one successful proposal called SECRET, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie project. After his PhD, he was a postdoctoral researcher in Instituto de Telecomunicações. As a task leader, he participated in the “Power Semiconductor and Electronics Manufacturing 4.0 (Semi40)” project, which received support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme by Austria, Germany, Italy, France, and Portugal.

Furthermore, he was a research associate at SnT- CritiX at the University of Luxembourg. He ran two of four EU pilot cybersecurity projects (SPARTA and CyberSec4Eu) and led Task 6.4 in the SPARTA project, which was about resilience by design of information infrastructures.

Dr Esfahani’s research is in cyber-security, cryptography, SDN, IoT, 5G and network coding. His research tackles many issues in security, efficiency, and fault tolerance. He is incredibly excited about novel, fundamentally-secure and fundamentally-efficient computation, communication and memory/storage approaches applied to V2X Communications.

Research / Scholarly interests

By increasing the number of Internet of Things (IoT) based devices, they need to provide flexible and secure integration. Although, new concepts and challenges for security issues around IoT devices appear every day. His research, therefore, focuses on security challenges (e.g., privacy, integrity, availability, reliability, and safety) in end-to-end secure communications, IoT environments, Industry 4.0 and 5G networks. In addition, he has recently started working on SDN-enabled VANETs direction (mainly in terms of security challenges).
