Key details
Dr Georgios Kampas
Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering
Dr Georgios Kampas was appointed as a Lecturer in the School of Engineering at the University of Greenwich in August 2017, becoming a Senior Lecturer in September 2020. He holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece (2006), an MSc in Engineering Seismology from Joseph Fourier University, France, and University of Patras, Greece (2007), an MSc in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Grenoble University, France (2008), and a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece (2012) focusing on system identification of seismically isolated bridges.
Georgios has extensive experience as a postdoctoral researcher. He spent a year at the University of Patras working on rocking isolation as an alternative seismic isolation technique for bridges, almost two years at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, US, investigating alternative methods of seismic isolation in bridges incorporating supplemental rotational inertia (inerter) and one year at the University of Dundee, UK, focusing on the numerical modelling and seismic analysis of concrete-sprayed tunnels. He has been involved as a consultant in significant projects regarding the structural health monitoring of bridges and conducted research as part of big academic groups involving Universities within Europe, North and South America.
Georgios' areas of interest are resilient infrastructure systems (with a focus on bridges and tunnels) against natural hazards, earthquake engineering and seismic isolation and resilient space (extraterrestrial) structures. His work mainly lies on the interface between structural and geotechnical engineering with a specific focus on soil-structural interaction.
